An Excerpt From Chuck Palahniuk’s New Novel ADJUSTMENT DAY

April 30, 2018) Chuck Palahniuk’s debut novel Fight Club introduced the world to Tyler Durden and his very particular brand of mayhem. Palahniuk’s most famous creation, immortalized on the big screen, became a cultural touchstone, revered and reviled, oft quoted and frequently misunderstood. Now, more than two decades later, Palahniuk returns to the themes of toxic masculinity, privilege and the appeal of cults with his latest novel, ADJUSTMENT DAY. Following his New York Times bestselling graphic novel debut Fight Club 2 and his coloring book debut Bait, ADJUSTMENT DAY is Chuck Palahniuk’s first novel in four years and, arguably, his most political.

The Conquistadors had the Bible. Mao's army had his book of quotations. The Nazis had Mein Kampf. American radicals had Saul Alinsky. And, in the novel ADJUSTMENT DAY, the Millennials will have the Declaration of Interdependence. Smug, geriatric politicians bring the nation to the brink of a third world war in an effort to control the burgeoning population of directionless young males; working-class men dream of burying the elites; and professors propound theories that offer students only the bleakest future. People are ready for the reckoning. They’ve been reading a mysterious book and memorizing the inspirational slogans of the Declaration of Interdependence:
  • The weak want you to forgo your destiny just as they’ve shirked theirs.
  • A smile is your best bulletproof vest.
  • The joy of fiction is that it only needs to smell true.
  • Imagine there’s no God. There is no Heaven or Hell.  There is only your son and his son and his son and the world you leave for them.
And when Adjustment Day arrives, Palahniuk fearlessly takes us through the logical conclusion of every separatist fantasy, alternative fact, and conspiracy theory lurking in the American psyche.

ADJUSTMENT DAY is a quintessential Palahniuk novel. (Who else would remind us what ancient shepherds, the Babylonian Code of Hammurabi and King Henry the VIII have in common?) It is a novel about the power of words, and our collective ability to misunderstand those words in profound ways. It is compelling and challenging, timely and timeless. On sale on May 1, 2018 from W. W. Norton & Company, ADJUSTMENT DAY is Palahniuk doing what he does best, skewering the absurdities in our society, unafraid to offend all parties.

The following in an excerpt from the novel.

****

His telephone woke Gregory Piper before dawn. According to the screen it was his agent calling, but Piper knew better. He’d pick up, and it would be a young voice, entry-level young, an assistant telling him, “Hold for a call from Mr. Leventhal, please.” A loud click would indicate he’d been put on hold, to wait while his agent finished another call. Or two. Piper knew where he stood in the pecking order.
He looked at the bedside clock. Five-thirty, Pacific Standard Time. It wasn’t even banker’s hours in New York. Over the phone a voice asked, “Gregory?”
Piper sat upright in bed, stunned to hear his agent. It was dark outside. He could hardly hear the freeway.
The voice continued, “Have you seen the television?”
Using his free hand, Piper dug among the sheets and blankets for the remote control. “Which channel?”
His agent snapped, “Any of them.” He added, “All of them!”
Piper found the remote and switched on the television near the foot of the bed. Filling the screen was himself, wearing his blue Savile Row single-breasted suit. Looking directly into the camera, he said, “This is Talbott Reynolds . . .”
Piper switched channels, and there he was once more, saying, “. . . absolute monarch . . .”
Piper tried a new channel, and he was there again, saying, “. . . appointed by the Council of Tribes.”
Over the phone, his agent demanded, “Did you sign anything?” Without waiting for an answer, he said, “We’re still waiting on those contracts.”
Between every televised glimpse of himself, Piper found no sports, no music videos, no advertisements. On a fourth television station, he was saying, “El dia de ajustamiento esta sobre nosotros.”
He considered the envelope of cash and if accepting it had implied a contractual agreement. It was stupid, but he hadn’t mentioned the money to anyone. If he could avoid the tax obligation he would. On a new television channel he was proclaiming, “Before creating anything of lasting value . . .”
That was his improvised line. Now the beer-swilling, cruller-munching production crew, they’d have to give him a writing credit on the project.
Another channel showed him saying, “. . . we must first create ourselves.”
The clock-radio on his bedside table went off, but instead of a morning traffic report, it was his voice saying, “. . . we must first create ourselves.”
Over the phone, his agent stormed. “We’ve already issued a cease and desist!”
The doorbell chimed.
On television, dignified and handsome, delivering his best Ronald Reagan tinged with his best JFK, Piper declared, “Adjustment Day is upon us.”
The phone held between his hunched shoulder and his ear, Piper rose from the bed and found his bathrobe. The doorbell chimed, again, as he tied the belt.
The television repeated, “Adjustment Day is upon us.” To anyone except him this would look like a repetition of the last take, but Piper heard the slight variation in how he stressed each word.
In his ear, his agent swore, “It’s on the radio and all over the web!” Over the phone’s tiny speaker came the layers of sound, each offset by a microsecond. “Adjustment Day is upon us.” An entire choir comprised of Talbott Reynolds. The synchronized voices resonating like a chant.
“Adjustment Day is upon us.”
Piper crossed his living room and squinted through the peep-hole on his front door.
From the bedroom television. Over his phone. From neighboring apartments, the words came. “Adjustment Day is upon us.”
At his door stood the man with the cauliflower ears and neck tattoo of a swastika. Piper wracked his memory for a name. The low-rent cinematographer. Into the phone, he said, “They’re here.” It was dawn with the light rising behind the visitor. Edging toward morning rush hour, the noise of the 101 grew louder.
His agent asked, “Who’s here?”
The chorus of words seemed to fade and blur. “Adjustment Day is upon us.” Becoming audio wallpaper. A new normal. White noise, like the freeway. Room tone.
Piper opened the door. He had the name, “You’re LaManly, right?”
His phone demanded, “Who’s LaManly?”
From every direction, “The list does not exist.”
The man, LaManly, reached into his jacket and produced a pistol. Without a word he leveled it at Piper’s chest.

Her studies included a year abroad at the University of Ghana, West Africa. Sherri lives in Los Angele, where she juggles teaching, performing, writing, and being a mom.

He is always honored to be asked to be a contribute work to the Bushwick Book Club series.

Amy Faust:
(Portland host/harmonizer) Amy is a professional talker who wakes up early to talk with Mike Chase on their award-winning morning radio show on 99.5 The Wolf. She also loves singing, reading and drinking, so she's pretty much in heaven right now.

Casey Holford is a music engineer and composer who records bands and artists in the NYC music community, and is currently mixing and scoring the Stitcher podcast Heaven's Gate.

Susan Hwang tells stories and makes things that are usually collapsible, like songs and times.  Her instruments take up space (accordion, Janggu—traditional Korean drum, piano) but other physical objects she can’t play, wear or eat intimidate her.  She founded, curates and hosts The Bushwick Book Club – a monthly live performance series and podcast presenting new work by local musicians, artists and chefs inspired by literature.  She hosted and produced TV variety talk show—The La La La Show— broadcast on Manhattan Neighborhood Network.  She’s was a singer, instrumentalist and songwriter in internationally touring cabaret-pop power trio, The Debutante Hour and she led NYC heavy math rock group Murderizer as well as neo-soul band Soozee Hwang and The Relastics.  Her duo with songwriter/producer Charlie Nieland is called Lusterlit, and they refuse to play anything but songs about books.  Their fourth recording will be released in 2018.  Susan plays accordions because they are pretty and lighter than pianos (barely).  She plays drums because it's healthy for a girl to hit things.

Alan Kanning specializes in melancholy.

Jessie Kilguss: Singer/songwriter Jessie Kilguss has released 3 albums. In 2015, she sang harmony and played the harmonium with Freddie Stevenson, opening for the Waterboys on the European leg of their Modern Blues tour. Also in 2015, she played a featured show at the Sundance Film Festival.
Kilguss is a former actress who made the switch to songwriting after performing with one of her musical heroes, Marianne Faithfull, in London and Sydney in a musical written by Tom Waits and William Burroughs. She also acted in the film adaptation of The Crucible, starring Daniel Day Lewis and Winona Ryder.

Larry Krone is an artist/entertainer who straddles the worlds of art, music, performance, and design. Ian Mackintosh is a nationally acclaimed singer, songwriter and producer who works as half of the duo Mackintosh Braun and also as a solo artist. He has done remixes for artists such as OMD / Aretha Franklin, Lady Gaga, Chromeo, and Shiny Toy Guns. His music has been featured in “Veronica Mars (the Movie)”, “The Beaver“ and on hit TV shows like “Grey’s Anatomy“, “Gossip Girl”, “Keeping up with the Kardashians“ and more. He is currently working on a solo album, “Don’t Show This to Anyone”.

Charlie Nieland - producer, lusterlit.bandcamp.com Charlie Nieland is a musician/producer in Bushwick Brooklyn. He's co written and produced material with Debbie Harry, Rufus Wainwright, Rachelle Garniez, Jessie Kilguss, Her Vanished Grace and more. Charlie is now half of the literature inspired songwriting and performing duo Lusterlit with Susan Hwang.

Jet Black Pearl The untamed and inimitable Jet Black Pearl from the port of Amsterdam spent many years in the south of France before settling in Portland in 2014.
She has performed on more than a thousand stages all over the world.
Intelligently zany, her songs sound like a mad hatter’s European gypsy tea party with a hip hop attitude.
She creates grooves and mesmerizing layers of flute, plastic bottles, vocal percussion and harmonies while squeezing one hot accordion.

Terry Radigan is a singer/songwriter, producer and member of the band VickiKristinaBarcelona! along with Rachelle Garniez & Amanda Homi.
She’s written for TV and for other recording artists including Patty Loveless, AnĂºna, Trisha Yearwood & Ashley Macisaac .  She hosts and curates the Radigan Roundup series in Brooklyn!

Don Rauf is the lead singer and songwriter for the New York band Life in a Blender, which recently released its ninth album Happy Enough on Fang Records. He is the author of many nonfiction books for middle school students, including Killer Lipstick and Other Spy Gadgets. He believes that if you hit the piñata hard enough, the candy will come out.

Justin Remer is a filmmaker and performing songwriter who hasn't done much you've heard of. He used to lead the Elastic No-No Band and now puts out albums as Duck the Piano Wire, so he's easy to Google. He also used to work for the exploitation film company Troma, and once had to appear at a Q&A as the Toxic Avenger despite having never appeared in a movie.

Stacy Rock (Founder of BBC LA Chapter) is an award winning singer songwriter and has toured extensively in support of her two albums.  She now lives and creates in Los Angeles with her husband and two children.  She can be seen weekly as the resident piano woman at the Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills and other local venues.  www.stacyrock.com

He has released avant-garde noise rock as well as sample-heavy pop music on vinyl on various indie labels. Most recently he composed and performed music for the feature film Big Significant Things, starring Game of Thrones’ Harry Lloyd and is writing a musical called Portland Dark.
