Furnture Review: Hemnes 8-Drawer Dresser by Ikea

Comments: Well it was finally time to ditch some old furniture in the bedroom and what ended up being on the list to buy was a dresser to class up the joint a bit. The strategy so far was to keep the look of the home in the dark wood color so that was the first step in the search. So where’d Mr. Monster end up at? Ikea of course. Found the Hemnes 8-Drawer dresser for $299 with its dark wood and silver knobs that should fit the look perfectly.

Trudging through the store the drawer comes in two long boxes. Assembly for the drawer I highly recommend having a second person with you to help hold up sections of the piece as you bolt on the parts. Now putting together furniture is not Mr. Monster’s cup of tea, so putting this bad boy up took about three hours with two items installed incorrectly and one item missing from the box.

First, the instructions called for the base (dark brown front) that was instead installed in the back of the body so I had to spray paint that piece to match since by the time we saw the piece was backwards, all the bolts were in place an could not be pulled out. Second, there was four bolts that were a bit different from the rest, we missed it and ended up digging into the middle center of the wood since the normal bolts were too long, that was our bad. Out of all the parts, there was one screw that was missing from the packaging (we looked), so ended up going to Home Depot (Lowe’s cost $2 more and we just needed one), to get the missing bolt which had to be purchased in a four-pack.

All in all it’s a nice piece. Would have been nicer without the mistakes and missing piece. Not bad for $300.

yeah, i'm building a HEMNES 8-drawer dresser right now... i'm following the directions step by step, making sure not to do the wrong thing... when i realize that STEP #2 tells you to use the wrong piece. Yes, that's right STEP TWO. Luckily i realized that something was totally wrong by step #7... but it got me so pissed off i needed to go confirm that i was right and IKEA was totally wrong and then yell about how their instructions infuriate me.

don't get me wrong, a lot of this IKEA stuff looks pretty good i guess, you know, if you overlook the fact that it is probably made out of recycled FEMA trailers and recalled baby formula from China.

Put together in three hours? Hell, it took me 16 hours over three days. I had one mistake: I failed to insert a screw to stabilize the middle divider. It all seems stable enough and to tear it apart to fix this would probably cause much more damage than it's worth, so I'm going to let it ride. My kitchen has the inadequate original 1921 cabinetry - did those people just not have anything? - and I needed storage room desperately. I bought this Hemnes 8-Drawewr on sale at IKEA for $239 for use in the kitchen as a buffet with lots of storage. It's working. The assembly directions in the box were correct: the ones online weren't, and this almost caused a meltdown until I realized that the directions are for two different models of the Hemnes 8-Drawer dresser. The line drawings in the language-free directions can be a bit frustrating, and this is not a job to do when one is tired or distracted. At times, it was almost a peaceful Zen-like experience to assemble - until I realized that I was doing something wrong. The instructions say to call IKEA if you have concerns - Forget about it! You're on your own here. I spent more than two hours on hold with IKEA on four separate phone calls to two different stores, and never did get to talk to a human being. Use two people for this project if you got 'em. I don't know how this dresser-cum-buffet will age, but its initial quality seems to exceed its price tag.
