Cuba - Separating truth from fiction

In May of this year, 11 members of the U.S. comics creative and business community participated in the C3 Havana Edition conference, meeting with 50 Cuban comics creators at Havana's National Animation Studio for an in-depth discussion of topics relating to comics, animation, video game development, storytelling, and film production. Now Martha Donato, President of MAD Event Management (which runs Long Beach Comic Con) and many of her fellow C3 Havana participants – among them writer Ron Marz (WITCHBLADE, DREAD GODS), artist Dennis Calero (MASKS, X-FACTOR), and Cryptozoic co-CEO John Nee – discuss the trip, and are joined by artist Dean Haspiel (CUBA: MY REVOLUTION) to discuss the changing landscape of U.S.-Cuba relations in the creative arts going forward.

Award-winning creators Gene Ha (TOP TEN, MAE), Dean Haspiel (ACT-I-VATE, HE RED HOOK), and D.J. Kirkbride (AMELIA COLE, THE ONCE AND FUTURE QUEEN) talk about their recent experiences and how what they've learned is impacting what they're doing with their current and future creator-driven projects.

Dean Haspiel
Emmy award winner and Eisner Award nominee Dean Haspiel created Billy Dogma, The Red Hook, illustrated for HBO's "Bored To Death," was a Master Artist at the Atlantic Center for the Arts, is a Yaddo fellow, a playwright, helped pioneer personal webcomics, and is the co-founder of Hang Dai Studios in Brooklyn, NY. Dino has written, drawn and collaborated on many superhero comic books and literary graphic novels for Marvel, DC/Vertigo, Archie/etc.
Gene Ha
Gene is an american comic book artists best known for his work with writer Alan Moore, Top 10 and its prequel the Forty-Niners. He has won 4 Will Eisner awards, the highest honor in American Comics. He writes and draws Mae from Dark Horse Comics.
Dennis Calero
He started writing and drawing comics and his client list includes Marvel and DC comics, Time/Warner and Sony Entertainment.
He helped develop “Xmen Noir” for Marvel Comics. With writer and actor Todd Stashwick, Calero co-wrote the pilot script “Clandestine” for SyFy.
Matt Hawkins
President/COO of Top Cow since 1998, Matt has created and written over 30 new franchises for Top Cow and Image including Think Tank, the Tithe, Necromancer, VICE, Lady Pendragon, Tales of Honor as well as handling the company's business affairs. His newest book, Dante, hits shelves in January.
David Gallaher
Author David Gallaher has received multiple Harvey award nominations and won The Best Online Comic Award for his Work on High Moon for DC Comics. David was an early pioneer of digital comics developing projects for Marvel as well as Box 13 - the first comic designed specifically for the iPhone - for ComiXology. He has served as a consulting editor for Attack on Titan, Sailor Moon, Phoenix Wright, and other manga projects for Kodansha and much more! 
Vince Hernandez
Vince is a comic book creator, writer, editor, and consultant for entertainment related projects. With over 18 years experience in the comic book industry and collaborations with a vast majority of leading publishers including Aspen Comics, Marvel Comics, DC Entertainment, Image Comics, Top Cow Productions as well as many film studios, production, and video game companies.  
Ron Marz
Ron has been writing comics for more then two decades, starting his career with a lengthy run on Silver Surfer for Marvel. Since then. he has worked for virtually every major publisher and compiled a long list of credits including stints on Thor for Marvel, Green Lantern, and Superboy for DC, Starwars for Dark Horse, and as a staff writer for CrossGen Comics.
Alex Segura
Alex is a novelist and comic book writer. He is the author of the Pete Fernandez Miami Mystey Novels, which include Silent City, Down the Darkest Street, and Dangerous Ends, all via Polis Books.
